A Site-Specific Model of Radar Terrain Backscatter and Shadowing
نویسندگان
چکیده
site-specific approach is presented to characterize terrain and target visibility and terrain clutter as seen by a shipboard radar in a coastal environment. The method takes into account the location of the ship, the particular terrain topography, the radar parameters, and the propagation effect. The method incorporates atmospheric refractive index conditions surrounding the radar, an optical ray-trace model, an electromagnetic parabolic equation model, a database of terrain elevations, and a clutter model. The model can simulate illuminated and shadowed regions of both surface clutter and elevated targets. Simulated clutter results are shown to compare favorably with clutter data measured at S-band, X-band, and Ku-band. This correspondence is evident in geo-graphic patterns and statistical distributions of clutter on directly illuminated terrain surfaces. (

Surface Roughness, Optical Shadowing, and Radar Backscatter;
The topography of natural surfaces at scales of a few meters or less is commonly referred to as roughness. These variations in height and slope, their magnitude, and the changes in structure as a function of scale length are of fundamental importance to interpretation of geologic emplacement regimes and subsequent modification. For most planetary studies and many terrestrial situations, no in s...
متن کاملProbabilistic Backscatter Coefficient
A probabilistic backscatter coefficient generating function (CGF) is introduced which produces realistic backscatter coefficient values for various terrain types over all incidence angles. The CGF was developed in direct support of a multilayer 3-D clutter modeling effort which successfully incorporated probabilistic clutter reflectivity characteristics and measured terrain elevation data to en...
متن کاملTemporal Stability of Soil Moisture and Radar Backscatter Observed by the Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR)
The high spatio-temporal variability of soil moisture is the result of atmosphericforcing and redistribution processes related to terrain, soil, and vegetation characteristics.Despite this high variability, many field studies have shown that in the temporal domainsoil moisture measured at specific locations is correlated to the mean soil moisture contentover an area. Since the measurements take...
متن کاملA Reflectance Model for Radar Shape From Shading
This paper describes work aimed at developing a practical shape-from-shading process for terrain analysis from radar imagery. The paper commences by providing an analysis of the radar reflectance properties of terrain structures. By using ground truth elevation data, we provide an empirical study of the radar reflectance characteristics for large-scale terrain features. The main conclusion of t...
متن کاملRadar properties as clues to relative ages of ridge belts and plains on Venus
[i] An ongoing issue regarding the crustal evolution of Venus is whether or not certain features and processes occurred in the same sequence and at the same time globally. This paper seeks to test one aspect of "directional" models for the geologic history; the inference that all ridge belts are older than regional plains. This test involves traditional geologic analysis, but also involves the ...
